Twitter mania

I just had to make a post about Twitter, its the most amazing community out there. Some people just don't get how amazing it can be. It's not just about telling people about the big hole you got in your sock or what you've digested for breakfast in 140 characters.

For me anyway its a one stop place to fill my spongy brain with all the knowledge it thirsts for. It seems to have caught on in such a big way throughout the world, whatever interests you its bound to have found its way onto Twitter.

You may be one of the majority who follow all the famous celebrities in the hope of getting a response from them, don't hold your breath though, I don't know how they can trawl the thousands of daily messages they receive each day, if you do get a response well done. Like this evening Jonathon Ross posted a twitpic link to a rather nice picture of Bono (U2) fixing the tie of actor Clive Owens, it's really refreshing to see informal spur of the moment pictures like that.

For me its the ability to follow a variety of news sources from throughout the world, and receive updates to their websites with links almost immediately. So instead of me spending time going through each website I like, I can instantly click on a news article that interests me and read it straight away.

  • BBCNews updates quite a lot during the day with links to news stories, might wish to do a search on twitter for BBC, you'll find numerous other things you can follow like BBCClick which seems to be the most followed BBC twitter, at around 137k followers at the time of writing this. Others include NIreland, Scotland, Wales, Sport
  • Kennedy Space Center am fascinated by space travel etc.
  • NASA National Aeronautics and Space Administration twitter
  • FoxNews this updates more than the BBC news one, can get a little annoying but has some interesting news stories
  • Associated Press more news, if you do a search for AP, you come up again with a great number of news outlets like US, technology, business, world, sport, politics
  • Music news from NME Magazine/website, or even follow its Editor David Moynihan twitter
  • Rolling Stone Magazine
  • Mashable is a great website that can help guide you through social media with info on Twitter, Google, Youtube, Facebook etc. I follow Pete Cashmore's twitter from Mashable.
  • Newspapers, search for your favourite newspaper, I am sure its bound to have a twitter or two
  • Stephen Fry, the great british actor/director/comedian/globetrotter/national treasure.
Of course other than all those you can be letting the world know about that sock with the hole in it, and get to know people. Have conversed in 140 characters with some really nice people on twitter. One such twitterer is J. SewellPerkins, a lady from Maryland in the US, started following me out of the blue, glad I followed back, does twit trivia a number of times a day and thoughts of the day. There are loads of users out there just like this lady, adds something positive to your day.

So get twittering and enrich your life a little, quench that thirst for knowledge.

Patrick Swayze - an inspiration.

It's pretty late here in England, just finished watching a Barbara Walters interview with Patrick Swayze. I do envy American Television in that we got to wait for a while before we can see stuff.

Such a moving interview, had me in tears at points. I can remember going myself to see "Ghost", "Roadhouse" and "Dirty Dancing" in the cinema in my younger days, seems so long ago. Bring back happy memories.

To the interview, was inspiring to watch, with moments of sadness, moments of determination from Mr Swayze, that he won't let the disease beat him. His wife of 33 years, Lisa, by his side. Looking at him, its hard not to say that he does look unwell, knowing that it is unoperable due to it spreading to his liver. I just pray that the remainder of his life is comfortable and painfree. He has the love of his wife to see him through, should not forget that she is suffering as well at the thought of losing him.

I don't have religion in my life, too hectic to devote time and thought to it. I will say a little prayer tonight before sleep for Mr Swayze, his family and for anyone in this world that has cancer. Unsure if it will help, but you never know someone up there might be listening and decide its about time a cure was given to us.

Peace and Love
